Overview

The following use cases describe how Frinx OpenDaylight Distribution with Content Delivery Networks technology can be used in a network:

  • Content Delivery Networks – Content Delivery Networks (CDN) must be able to direct users to the best available cache that contains relevant content. This can be done by mapping the user request to an IP prefix and identifying the correct cache to serve that prefix (based on a combination of content availability, cache load, and proximity of the prefix to the cache). Service providers typically identify the location of prefixes within their own networks using BGP communities. Those BGP communities can be mapped to BGP communities specified by the CDN owner, or can they can be used to select the appropriate MEDs to use when advertising a prefix to the CDN owner over multiple BGP peering sessions.

  • Inbound Traffic Engineering – Traffic can be load-balanced over multiple links to an upstream transit provider by tagging IP prefixes with different BGP communities or by selecting different MEDs on the BGP peering session for each link.

The Frinx OpenDaylight (ODL) Distribution is a carrier-class version of ODL. In addition to the public ODL code, it includes software and functionality unique to the Frinx ODL Distribution. Frinx offers open source-based networking software products together with support services, training, consulting, and development packages. Frinx is part of a vivid ecosystem of open-source players that enrich Cisco® solutions for customers' business challenges.
