The IP Communications Business Unit (IPCBU) is pleased to make available Quick Calculator and Weather Forecast by Weatherbug applications for customer (restricted to IT Administrator) download via Cisco.com. These two fun and free "as is" applications are Cisco developed and are designed specifically for IP Phone 8900 and 9900 Series endpoints. These applications take advantage of MIDlets (java programming). MIDlets are used frequently to design applications for devices such as mobile phones today and deliver a graphically richer, more responsive user experience. With Quick Calculator and Weather Forecast, you can get a taste for the applications potential that can be delivered with these endpoint solutions.

The Quick Calculator and Weather Forecast applications require Cisco Unified Communications Manager/Business Edition System Release 8.0 along with IP Phone Firmware 9.0(2) or later. Note also that internet access must be provisioned for the Weather Forecast application as this service is provided courtesy of Weatherbug. They are not downloadable/installable by end users.

For more information about these applications and access to the zip download file which includes the two application files + their documentation, go to the following URL on Cisco.com (note - this will take you out from the collaboration community):

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/voicesw/ipphone_app.html

Finally, you are encouraged to examine our Cisco Developer Network, where a number of developer partner applications are available for Cisco Unified IP Phones that can address employee productivity, cost reduction and customer satisfaction initiatives within your organization. For further details about Cisco Developer Network applications for Cisco Unified IP Phones, go to www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/ctdp/Search.pl.

Once there:

1. Select IP Communications under the pull down menu "Enter Solution"

2. Select IP Phone Applications under the pull-down menu, "Select a Solution Subcategory"

3. Check the box to include Technology Developer Affiliates

You will then be presented with a listing and brief description of third-party developer applications available for Cisco Unified IP Phones

Any guideline how to activate these two applications on Cisco IP Phone on my desk ?

Hi Josip,

Within the software download file, there is a readme file for IT administrators on how to install which along with some general use guidelines with the applications. Their design is intended to be fairly straight-forward and intuitive. The video datasheet walks through a couple of use case examples for each application that you (or others) can view once the applications are pushed to your 8961/9951/9971 endpoints through a firmware update.

Trust this helps.

I installed this Midlets. I have the Calculator working, but I can not get the Weather Forecast working at all, no matter what I try. Is there a reason this midlet (Weather Forecast) is not operational? Is there any other Midlets that Cisco has?

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. These were two experimental MIDlet applications that the BU opted to make available, on an "as-is" basis for the 9900 Series endpoints. Short of existing documentation and uninstalling and reinstalling, not sure what other recourse there is for you. I will ask around internally and if there is someone that thinks they could assist or comment, I will reach out back to you with their contact info.

Thank you for being a loyal Cisco customer.

Hi Kim,

I tried the both apps.Calculator works fine but weather forcast app  is not....any updates on this..??

Hello,

These two applications were development applications from the IP Communications Business Unit shortly after launch of the 9900 and 8900 Series (8961) phones from Cisco. The BU at the time made the decision to make them available to customers but were positioned "as is" from the date of their being made publicly accessible. There is no technical support as these applications were not productized and thus, are not supported by our Technical Assistance Center (TAC).

We will be removing this page and the resulting software access after consultation with the BU given their lack of formal support. It is possible that third party CDN developer partners may offer such applications, or another form of them, should you wish to explore such an option.

This link is to the page where it was noted the software was provided "as is".  If you need this reference, would encourage doing so shortly as we shall be submitting a request to have this page taken down for reason cited above.

Does anyone know if the weather app will work on an 8945 phone?  Thanks!

Hi, Steve,

According to the admin guide for the 8945 IP phone, the answer is yes.

I am new to Call Manager and am supporting small number of 9971 phones.  didnt see a readme with the file i downloaded but there was a pdf.  Is there a way this can be hosted using the call manager web server ?  I would prefer not to have ot setup another server for just this.  We have a small network at this point so we dont have a web server running at this point.
