Connecting API Branches, APIC-EM Apps, APIC-EM GUI Tasks

Hi,

I'm attempting to connect the dots a bit on three primary ways to think about what you can do with APIC-EM. I seem to recall some slides that spell out some of these ideas, but I can't find them - if that rings a bell with anyone, would love to hear of a link.

Anyway, my question/request is for any help in completing and making the following breakdown complete and accurate. The idea is pretty basic:

- The API has several branches or services (see APIC doc here http://devnetapic.cisco.com/).

- The APIC-EM doc of course lists the APIC-EM apps by name

- The APIC-EM GUI lists the main functions as clickable icons on the left side of the page.

Big picture: What's the correlation between those three? Which main branch(es) of the API tree go with which apps and go with which main function on the far left of the GUI (the application pane, I believe it's called)? Here's what I've come up with so far, ignoring the parts of the API that seem like overhead topics (aka not related to a specific app):

API - Flow Analysis; App - Path Trace; GUI – Path Trace

API – Inventory; App - Network Visibility; GUI – (1) Discovery, (2) Device Inventory, (3) Host Inventory

API - Network Discovery; App - Network Visibility; GUI – not sure

API - Network Plug and Play; App – Network Plug and Play; GUI – Network Plug and Play

API - Policy Administration; App – EasyQoS; GUI – EasyQoS

API – Topology; App - Network Visibility; GUI – Topology

API – Visibility; App – IWAN; GUI - IWAN

I know there are probably more than a few exceptions and possibly some overlap. Any input is welcome.

Hi Wendell,

I have most of this in my API deep dive presentations.

I was taking a "use case" view rather than just the apps on the controller.

If I want to automate PnP, what are the API i can use?

If I want to automate EasyQoS, what are the API?

Automation of inventory tagging etc..

Does this make sense.

Hi Adam,
Thanks - yes, those are the slides that I couldn't recall. I find the drawings of the API branch relationships useful. I listen to the Cisco Live on Demand recording of the session when I catch a spare moment! APIC-EM API Deep Dive (2017 Berlin)

Also, I'm good with a use case approach as well. I was thinking more in terms of a flow like "do a, b, c with an app in the GUI, then where do I look in the API for the equivalent" kind of approach. The deep dive session will help. Maybe I'll add the CLUS 2017 session to my schedule! :-)

Thanks again,

Wendell
