APIC-EM Wireless PnP - Image push

Hi,

The wireless AP provisioning in APIC-EM is a terrific capability but missing one piece and that is to be able to push the image.  Is that capability on the roadmap and if so is there an estimated time frame?

Not sure if my information is dated.  Here is the document I'm using:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/technology/mesh/8-2/b_APIC-EM-PNP-deployment-guide.html

Unsupported for AP:

  • Image
  • Device Certificate

Good stuff, Nick. Thank you!  I'll make sure that I was reading the latest info but I did try to actually upgrade a 3800AP (which the doc I read said was not supported but 1.3 has it in the platform drop down) and if I built the project via the GUI there was no option to add an image to the device record.

Hi Claudia,

this is correct.  For AP, the config file (ap.json) contains the IP address of the WLAN controller.

The WLAN controller is responsible for upgrading software on the AP, not APIC-EM.

The other attributes are

  • wlc (primary, secondary, tertiary)
  • mode (local/flex)
  • apGroup
  • and flex connect group

Does that make sense?

Yes it does Adam.

The use case we have is that we want to stage APs that are going to remote offices and we don't want the APs to pull the images over the (some times slow speed) WAN.  It can take a while plus we don't want to burn the bandwidth.  So we want to put AP Name, Controller Name and IP, and Image on the AP before we ship them out.  We do this today via a small WLC and its a bit of a pain when we have hundreds to provision since its a small WLC with a few ports and even if we add ports its not licenses for too many APs.  I was hoping we could use the APIC-EM instead but it does not sound like its on the roadmap.  Thanks!

That makes sense. Have you used the "make a wish" button?

LOL!   I will do so for the first time shortly!

i was thinking some more about this.  one of the original goals of WLAN PnP was to eliminate the need for "staging", but i also understand the image download issue.

I will chat with Product Managemernt team on your requirement.

Hi Adam,

Has this (APIC-EM Wireless PnP - Image push) made it onto the roadmap?

Thanks,

Brad

Hello,

I Have a similar problem:

I've recieved 1000 AIR-AP2802i-C-K9 in Active version: 8.2.151.0 and if I have a look to the release notes of APIC-EM the compatibility version is 8.3...

So if there is no mean to upgrade via APIC-EM what is the solution to provision all my APs...

Best regards
