Hello,

20% of our chassis have been impacted by this defect, and replacing the whole chassis is really painful...

Question #1 : if the defect is the limited to the mux-buffer module (WS-X4590-E), would it be possible to replace only this module, as described here : http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/hardware/installation/guide/78-14409-08/4500inst/05trblsh.html#wp1023669 or here : http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/hardware/catalyst4500e/installation/guide/Eseries/04replac.html#14055 ?

Question #2 :

it looks like WS-C4510R+E currently sold are also facing the same kind of problem with redundancy modules WS-X4590-EX (Cisco BugID CSCuq18992) - can Cisco provide a long-term solution for these two issues ?

Hi,

Question #1 :if the defect is the limited to the mux-buffer module (WS-X4590-E), would it be possible to replace only this module,

Answer: - Sorry to say the complete chasis should be replace. REplacing the linecard will not solve the sissue here. AS the chasis contains the mux-buffer componenets behind every linecard.

Question #2 :

Answer:- Again same. Replace the chasis.

Hello,

regarding question #1, redundancy modules (WS-X4590-E) are field replaceable, as explained here : http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/hardware/catalyst4500e/installation/guide/Eseries/04replac.html#14055

So replacing the mux-buffer attached to the backplane (and reseating the line card after the mux-buffer replacement) should fix the issue, and would be easier than replacing the full chassis.

Regarding question #2, I'm a little bit worried by your answer... does it mean that new Catalyst 4500R+E chassis are as unrealiable as Catalyst 4500R-E ones ? Should we consider avoiding Cat4500R+E chassis deployments in order to make sure that we won't be affected by this defect in the future ?

Hi,

We had the same issue on two C4510R-E Chassis. One or two defect Slots.

We fixed it by replacing the blown F1 Fuse (SMD, 2A) in the Centre of the mux-buffer modules (WS-X4590-E).

For CSCuv04312 - The issue is on one of the components of the chassis. The component is not field replaceable. The chassis will need to be replaced if you want to use the affected line card slots.

Question 2 : Not all the WS-C4510R+E chassis are affected by the bug. The chassis that are affected are being replaced, issue has been resolved.

Please get the chassis replaced if it is affected by CSCuq18992.

CSCuq18992 - The permanent solution will be to open a TAC case and get the chassis replaced.

Hello,

We got this problem today (26/nov/2020) and we unplugged the linecard impacted to another slot, and after 2 or 3 tries on several slots, it is OK (the error is not showed anymore, the module & ports are visibles).

It is maybe a fast/economic/temporary solution before the change of the whole chassis.

We remarked also that if you have any failover configured on your switch, the failover is not executed when the error occurs, causing impact. We had to perform a "hw-module module X reset" & a "hw-module slot X reset" to really put down the slot 2 and then the failover could work.
