Hi All,

What causes high memory utilisation on a 1921 CPU? What pool of memory does the CPU use?

Thanks

"Things" that acquire memory.  For example, certain tables will acquire more RAM as they grow such as rourting to an interface rather than an IP (i.e. proxy table grows), or netflow stats that grow.

You could also have a software bug with a memory leak, i.e. some processes acquires new RAM blocks but don't correctly release no longer used blocks.

Hi Joseph,

Thank you for that informaiton.

So what would you suggest as the best solution to that problem? I was thinking of getting a bigger router like a 2900.

Or if its a memory leak then to upgrade the version of IOS?

For a memory leak, yes upgrading the IOS might fix.  You would need to see if your memory leak is a known defect, and whether it has been corrected.

"Best solution" is it depends.  If you're using some feature that uses lots of memory, do you need to use it in the manner your are.  For example, with NetFlow, you can set how quickly data expires or you can used summarized stats.

Another common solution is to determine whether you model router can be memory upgraded.  If so, just add RAM.

Amar,

How long has the high cpu utilizaton been going on? Does this happen at certain times, or constantly?
