Serial interface on router

I am new to routing and switching.  can someone please tell me what is the purpose of serial interface on a router and is it used in latest routers?

The interface's purpose is to provide an interface compatible with the corresponding serial media.

What interfaces are supported for any Cisco router should be noted in that device's datasheets.

As a general trend, newer routers, might not support all the serial media older routers did because such media is being used less frequently.
