What is the "Admin Host Port" on UCS Manager?

What is the "Admin Host Port" on UCS Manager, and How does it work on UCS(VIC, IOM, etc) architectures?

"Admin Host Port" has this : 1, 2, Any

And If selected "1" for vNIC, their are mapping on first of PCI address.

But, selected "2" is mapping on end of PCI address.

Why?

I can't understand this menu on UCS VIC architectures.

They are means this port group on VIC Adapter?

Port 0 connected IOM-A, Port 1 connected IOM-B.

But, If eth1 path is only fabric b(not failover) and admin host port is "1", how to flow packets?

Please, teach me using any picture.

Admin host-port placement

Although Manual vCon placement will trigger a vNIC/vHBA load balance, we can manually specify which host-port vNICs will be placed on (Admin Host Port). This will only appear as on option for the Cruz VICs.

From this, you could manually split the vNICs among host port 1 or host port 2. It would not be recommended to set every vNIC/vHBA to the same host-port, as this would be like utilizing only the VIC1240 when you also have a VIC1280 installed. You would not be utilizing the full available bandwidth.

i using the single VIC 1340 Adapter now.

This VIC Adapter have a issue.

This is vNIC, vHBA placement issue.

I was created vNIC 0~19 (Total 20 vNICs) and vHBA 0~1 (Total 2 vHBA).

And, I was configured vNIC 0~ is order 1 ~ //vhba 0 order 21 ~

After a associate this profile, and boot a ESXi 5.5 or 6.0, has a vmnic mapping problems.

But, After a change placement set "Admin Host Port 1 for vNIC, Admin Host Port 2 for vHBA(Orders are same)" , disappeared this issue.

Why?

Please, check this log. (set Admin Host Port option, NOT "ANY")

There is also a documented "bug" on this (note: there's no fix since this is not an issue).

The jist is to leave your vNICs set to "ANY" and place your vHBAs on Host Port 2.  This will make your vNIC order never change and ESXi will be fine.  Note you will need to remove all your vNICs, boot ESXi, shut down ESXi and re-add your vNICs/remap to vSwitches to fix it.  Take a look at that discussion, all you need is in there.

Admin Host Port : This will force the HBA to always be the absolute last device to enumerate and therefore will not mess with PCI ordering, again providing you always add NICs to the end of the PCI order not in the middle or end.

I don't think I understand your question.

The VIC processes the host port by enumerating everything on host port 1 first then host port 2.  the adapters will be enumerated and assigned a PCI ID in that order (Again, host port 1 first, then host port 2).  That's just how it works -- if you don't want that functionality you have to set everything to host port 1 and you lose the extra performance.

And what do you mean process this option on UCS architectures?  I wouldn't say you need to worry about it much -- place the NICs, let it load the adapters across the two ports, move on -- unless you have very high performance needs.  then manually set the adapters on alternating host ports assuming you have each vSwitch port group connecting to two different adapters.

First off, only the VIC 1340 and VIC 1380 are connected to the host server by two physical ports (host ports).  Since no other card has this feature the remaining cards in the UCS fleet ignore this setting entirely and will simply concatenate host port 1 and the host port 2 virtual adapters together.

Second, there is no bug. When you set the port to ANY the VIC responds by taking your total number of vNICs and dividing them in half. The first half go onto Host Port 1. The second half go onto Host Port 2. If your vHBAs are also set to ANY it will also divide those and place half on host port 1 (at the end) and half on host port 2 (at the end) -- which is why the reason to statically set vHBAs to be admin host port 2.

@ ssumichrast - the admin host port controls the 2 PCI channels, setting to auto results in round robin between these 2 channels on the vCON.   I have but a single 1340 VIC, no extenders for extra bandwidth.  I want to understand the impact of manual configuration of the admin host ports per vNIC. 

Example, does setting this manually control what FI traffic is sent to?  or is this just traffic internal within the VIC?   I want to make certain when I configure this setting (admin host port) that I'm not degrading the performance of my system in some way.   I have other technologies I support, HPE for example, I can set a nic in the blade for a specific bandwidth but this is just a setting and within the stack all the bandwidth is actually shared so the setting serves as a guaranteed minimum, nothing more, doesn't cap the throughput, and if the bandwidth is available that specific nic could carry more traffic over the connection than the logic minimum I have set.    does the VIC 1340 work the same way within the PCI channels whereby despite the configuration the admin host port the VIC will still carry the maximum amount of traffic it can at any given point?    Please advise, I want to be certain that I'm not degrading performance in some way
