Can anyone tell me what protocol cisco vpn client uses for tunneling?

it varies, i guess it depends on the configuration, but below i list few of them:
udp 500 (i.e. isakmp)
udp 4500 (i.e. nat-traversal)
ip 50 (i.e. esp)

You misunderstand my question.
It looks like vpn client uses some kind of tunnel to forward l2 frames. What tunnel is it? l2f?

how would the vpn client tunnle the layer2 frames? just wondering if you are referring to ipsec or pptp or sth else.
