Rights/permissions required for WebCommunicator install?

Hi,

Can it be clarified which rights or permissions are required on the end-user desktop to install the Web Communicator component? Does it require administrative rights to install? If so, why and can it be changed to only require end user level access?

Reason being is the distribution and updates of the Web Communicator are inherently tied to our implementation of it, prompting from a new version of our software to the end user to upgrade is key, and if they cannot perform that upgrade themselves the management headache around notification and customer IT deployment becomes a much larger item.

Bump... any answer for this?

Hi Bryan,

Let me look into this and get back to you.

Thanks,

Hi Bryan,

Yes, the the Cisco Web Communicator Add-on does require administrative rights to install. The add-on can be installed into shared system directories (requires administrator rights), but apart from that, it is quite dependent on different components - which on their own, may require administrator privileges.

Your request has been escalated to the Jabber team. They would need to investigate, if changes can be made to allow installation with only end user level access.

Thanks,

Thanks Smita,

This is something that we consider fairly critical as we intelligently prompt users to get the package if we detect it is not installed or needs to be upgraded to a newer version. If the end-user cannot install it on their own this is a major blocker to usability in this case.

Thanks for providing the business impact for this requirement. I will forward it to the Jabber team.

Regards,
