upgrade from CUCM 9.0.1 to 1X.X.X

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

I have an upgrade coming up where they want to go from 9.0.1 to 10.5.2 and beyond. Any best practices comments or concerns? Does anyone know if you can jump straight from 9.0.1 to 10.5.X or 11? Caveats?

happy new year

you can make direct upgrade from 9.0(1) to 10.5.2 (Compatibility Information for Cisco Unified Communications Manager and IM and Presence Service, Release 10.x - Upgrade …) so as you can upgrade to 11.0.1 (Compatibility Matrix for Cisco Unified Communications Manager and IM and Presence Service, Release 11.x - Upgrade Paths…)

Best practice is make backup and just do as it described in document - http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/upgrade/11_0_1/CUCM_BK_U97537E5_00_upgrade-guide-cucm_1101.pdf  :-)

Specific procedures will depend on if the 9.0.1 is on MCS 7800 or virtualized.

If you’re already virtualized, then it’s just an “upgrade” as Dmitry describes.

If 9.0.1 is on MCS 7800, you can’t just do an “upgrade” as 10.0.1+ are only supported virtual-only, so some P2V required.

PCD Migration is easiest method if deployment is medium/large size and you have the right feature level of virtualization license.

If your environment is small, PCD may be overkill and the legacy manual P2V process may not be as bad for you (backup MCS, deploy 9 virtual, restore 9 to virtual, upgrade 9 to 10 on virtual). This legacy process is painful for medium/large deployments, especially if the MCS is ancient, part of why we built PCD Migration the way we did.

The “Modernize the Base”, “Refresh Collab”, “Drive to Collab” sites have some end to end procedure recommendations to help with the decision making.

1. Export Restricted or Export Unrestricted version?

2. Only CUCM or any another applications(CCX, UCn, PIM, SRST Manager)?

3. Solution size(users/phones/cluster size)
