Jabber Web SDK and Presence

I'm trying to do something simple but cannot find enough information in the web sdk docs.

I just want to be able to tell when a certain user is present using their JID.

Do I have to be logged in to a jabber account for that?

We just want to visit a page which is basically a profile. And then see whether or not that person is available.
