GCI installed storage capacity question

Hello,

I have a question regarding Figure 20 (Global data center storage capacity) in the 2016-2021 GCI, page 21:

The y-axis scale of Figure 20 seems to disagree with the text. The text indicates total installed storage capacity values of 663 EB and 2.6 ZB in 2016 and 2021, respectively.  However, reading from the graph one might estimate around 900 EB and 2.3 ZB in 2016 and 2021, respectively.  Would it be possible to get the Figure 20 yearly data in tabular form to avoid any misinterpretation due to this discrepancy?

Many thanks for your consideration!

Eric

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your interest in Cisco's Global Cloud Index (GCI).

Yes, somehow in the white paper rendition of the graph the y-axis has become a little off in relation to the actual numbers that are reflected in the text.  Following is the data in tabular form with installed storage capacity in exabytes, as requested:

Column1201620172018201920202021
Compute (28% CAGR)                     154                      196                      259                      322                      413 534
Collaboration (33% CAGR) 90                      120                      160                      210                      284 379
Database/ Analytics / IoT (31% CAGR)                     128                      168                      219                      280                      370 487
ERP and Other Business Apps (32% CAGR)                     148                      213                      277                      344                      449 582
Video Streaming (36% CAGR) 48 67 95                      123                      165 220
Social Networking (37% CAGR) 29 40 57 76                      105 140
Search (26% CAGR) 23 30 39 49 62 75
Other Consumer Apps (29% CAGR) 43 56 74 94 123                      156
Total                     664                      891                   1,180                   1,496                   1,971                   2,574

We appreciate your reference to our GCI data, also per the following Q&A:

  1. Q.    May I or my organization or company use or publish Cisco GCI forecast data?
  2. A.     Yes. Cisco welcomes and encourages press, analysts, service providers, and other interested industry parties (business, regulatory, or academic) to use or publish the data. We do require that proper Cisco attribution be given for any and all Cisco GCI data that is published or shared in private or public, print and electronic forms (for example, source: Cisco Global Cloud Index [or Cisco GCI], 2016–2021). No further signatures or consents are required to reference our publicly available white papers and reports. We are always interested in the context in which our data is used and would appreciate it if parties that use our content would share copies of their completed work containing Cisco GCI insertions.

Thanks for your interest, and hope this helps/clarifies.

Thanks,

Shruti
