1. How the finesse desktop checks whether the finesse server is reachable? Will it ping the server at regular intervals of time?
Yes, the Finesse desktop pings the server via the SystemInfo API every so often. Users are also subscribed to the SystemInfo node, so when Finesse goes down (with the exception of the Finesse Tomcat and notification service), a notification will be sent to the user letting them know that Finesse is out of service.
2. Does XMPP Notifications have something to do with this?
Yup, see above with the SystemInfo node.
