Cisco Virtualized Multiservice Data Center (VMDC) is a CVD-based reference architecture for building Data Center and Cloud. It is comprised of end-to-end infrastructure made up of networking, compute, storage, virtualization, orchestration, and service assurance.

Today, we are pleased to announce immediate availability of Cisco VMDC Release 2.3. This release is positioned for smaller Enterprise in Unified Data Center and Tier 2/3 Service Providers.

VMDC 2.3 delivers incremental enhancements to VMDC 2.x release train, enabling lower cost and smaller footprint compared with previous releases, and provides a hierarchical network design in the Data Center using STP and vPC technologies.  This Nexus 7004 platform design enables similar functionality, such as multi-tenancy and security – in-line with the earlier VMDC 2.x designs – but at a smaller scale and cost.  In addition, the system release provides an alternative design using Nexus 5000 platform, which again enables similar functionality with an even smaller physical footprint.

The highlights of this release include:

  • Optimized design for higher tenancy scale, with lower cost and footprint
  • Scales up to 500 tenants and 6000 VM per Pod, 2000 tenants and 24000 VMs per DC
  • Collapsed Core/Aggregation layer with Nexus 7004 and F2 line-cards
  • ASA & ACE appliances connecting directly to Nexus 7004 Aggregation layer
  • ASR 1006 as DC WAN/PE device
  • Optimized Gold, Silver, Bronze tenancy models to achieve higher tenancy scale
  • New Copper tenancy mode with Internet-based Cloud access - suitable for SMB customers
  • Validated with FlexPod-aligned topology, but works with any integrated compute stack

Build Cloud Infrastructure

In parallel with the release of VMDC 2.3, we are introducing Cloud Ready Infrastructure (CRI) Kits, which provide pre-defined VMDC platform configurations in order to significantly simplify the ordering process. Small, Medium, and Large CCW configurations are available and supported by the Sales Acceleration Center: sac-support@cisco.com
