We're upgrading our network and would appreciate your input.

We're planning to upgrade our network, and we'd love to have your input.

Management has changed their mind with phases upgrade.

Currently, our network includes a Core Switch (Cisco C3560G) and 10 Access Switches (Cisco C2960X), all connected through 1GB Fiber links. Here's our upgrade plan:

**Phase 1:**
We want to replace the 10 Cisco C2960X Access Switches with Cisco 9300 models. During this phase, we'll keep the existing 1GB SFP transceivers for fiber connections that link each floor of the building to the Core switch.

**Phase 2:**
In the future, we aim to upgrade the core switch by replacing the Cisco C3560G with a Cisco C9500-24X-A. During this phase, we also plan to upgrade the 1GB links to faster 10GB connections to link up with our Access Switches.

We're seeking your insights and feedback, particularly regarding network modules that support both 1GB and 10GB backward compatibility. During Phase 1 (lasting 2-3 months), we'll maintain 1GB connections before transitioning to 10GB in Phase 2.

Our main question is about the suitable network module for the C9300 during Phase 1 and 2. The C9300-NM-4M has been suggested by our supplier, but upon checking, it seems to have copper ports rather than fiber ports. Would the C9300-NM-8X be a better choice? Does it support both 1GB and 10GB, and is it backward compatible?

Your suggestions and recommendations are highly valued, and we appreciate your input.

Hello!

Your plan sounds as should be.

I would suggest C9300-NM-8X - it supports both 10G as well as 1G SFP's.

Hello @techkings003

C9300 Network Module "C9300-NM-8X" does support both 1GB and 10GB connections, making it a suitable choice for your phased network upgrade plan. It provides eight 10GB SFP+ ports, and these ports are backward compatible with 1GB SFP transceivers.

Given that you plan to upgrade to 10GB connections in Phase 2, the C9300-NM-8X offers the flexibility to support higher speeds while being compatible with your existing 1GB connections during Phase 1. This module aligns well with your future upgrade requirements.

You will need SFP 1G compatible for your phase 1. GLC-TE (matrix compatibility : https://tmgmatrix.cisco.com/?npid=670).

Best regards

Thank you so much.

And I don't completely understand why would the supplier suggest you C9300-NM-4M which dosen't have SFP ports but copper. I belive they didn't understand your needs.
