CVI Audio Quality

Hi,

We use the Teams Cisco CVI solution on Cisco endpoint across our estate, spanning over 700 devices. We've found regardless if we use something simple such as Cisco table or ceiling microphone connected directly, or the grossly expensive highest spec'd Shure MXA920 microphones, the audio that is picked up and sent out via a Teams CVI call is just not very good. There is always a slight noise that can be heard or the echo cancellation seems to be overly aggressive, compared to a regular Webex call. We have multiple room types, styles, device models, regardless audio is always mediocre at best.

I'm wondering what the actual path is for the audio when doing a CVI call and what audio codec/compression is happening and being used, as this really needs to be improved upon.

Curious to know as well if anyone else using Cisco Room devices and CVI calls find this as well.

Thanks

Recently Cisco made changes to the bandwidth between Cisco and Microsoft, and the audio quality of CVI calls is now considerably better. We have around 200 cameras, and we now consider that this issue of poor audio quality in CVI calls has been resolved.

Good morning, in my company we also have the same problem, when we connect to a Microsoft Teams meeting and activate noise suppression, the audio cuts out.

Hello my friend.

In this week , surprising everyone in our company, the bitrate was increased to up 70Kbps. Issue solved !

Hi Fernando, thanks for the update! Can you elaborate the solution, are you saying your company up'd the bitrate of MS Teams or has MS Teams updated and improved the bitrate ?

Thanks

Is there a way to obtain statistics between Webex and MS Teams cloud for CVI traffic? I could not find any on WCH. Maybe on O365 admin somewhere?

Facing same issue here.

Microsoft considers 36kpbs as bit rate the enough to transport voice. They builded the Satin codec to meet their requirement, work ins low band and be able to speech to text in the neural level.
First fact: External systems connection to MS environment, like Cisco, works with other codecs, like Opus, an adaptive and flexible codec. Using Cisco cameras, monitoring the call statistics, we the down bit rate of opus over 60kpbs, and up bit rate, not over 34kpbs. On the same meeting, joining the MS Teams meeting using the Chrome, and opening the chrome://webrtc-internals/, we see the same down and up bit rate, CONCLUDING THE LOW BIT RATE IS NOT CAUSED BY CVI, BUT MICROSOFT. Joining in different meetings, like Webex and Zoom, we don't face the same poor audio than MS Teams. Monitoring the call statistics, the up stream of Webex and Zoom exceeds the 34kpbs of Teams, reaching 60kpbs, 64kpbs in Opus, more information sent to another side.
Second fact: Joining in different meetings, like Webex and Zoom, the audio is better? Yes. We just reach same quality in Teams when we talk very near of the Cisco table microphone. MS Teams probably doesn't have DB gain on audio capture features, once It was designed to be used on PCs, with headsets, and consequently, near of the microphone.

Avoiding a lot of complain about MS Teams, in my perspective, the solution of the poor audio on MS Teams Meetings using CVI, is improve the audio capture using better microphones on the desks, in quality, or quantity.

Hello josephhayman.

We facing the same issue here and the issue seems between CVI x MS. Note that the audio protocol is the same used in Webex calls (Opus with variable bitrate) but via CVI the audio sent from room to MS cloud use mono type (around 32kbps).  Using various mics types this issue still affecting here. Hope that Cisco developers can solve this.

We have same problem in CVI solution, teams users couldn't hear clearly. but the audio quality is very nice between the Cisco devices when we used Cisco Webex call.
